Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in
love in a quite absolute way.  What you are in love with, what seizes
your imagination, will affect everything.  It will decide what will get
you out of bed in the morning, what you will do with your evenings, how
you will spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks
your heart and what amazes you with joy and gratitude.  Fall in love,
stay in love and it will decide everything.

To Nancy

You brought us together to an unfamiliar place; surrounded by unfamiliar people, unfamiliar sights, and unfamiliar sounds. You brought us together in the most unlikely of places at the most unlikely of times. You brought us together as husband, mother, father, brother, sister, cherished friend and family. You brought us together to love and to bear witness to the tie that binds. You brought us together to witness the circle of love, a circle with no beginning or end, but with a strength that is far beyond the measure of man.

You brought us together.

You gathered us together surrounded by love; a love so strong that it transcends to the heavens. You gathered us together to walk through the fire, to share the burden, to feel the pain of our loss. You gathered us together, each dazed and confused, searching for meaning; searching for purpose. You gathered us together as husband, mother, father, brother, sister, cherished friend and family. You gathered us together and together we bore witness to your magnificence.

You gathered us together.

Together, we say goodbye for the moment. Together, we cry our tears and share our pain. Together, we remember and will never forget your brilliance and the miracle you played in this world. Together, we will take our steps forward always remembering your lesson of the journey. Together we will grieve, we will persevere, and we will find purpose. I signed up for the 2000 Lake Placid Ironman at the prodding of Chris. Now out of fear I had to train like never before. The long bikes were with a group of people I barely knew. Nancy was one of them. We would meet at the Sellars’s house and ride longer every week. Those training rides replaced the fear with fun. In the bike at Lake Placid, I was on my second of two loops. Riding alone and feeling hot tired and lonely I hear a voice from behind,” I’d recognize that hairy back any where”. Hi Nancy, now I have someone to ride with.

She would pass me on the up hills and I would pass her going down. The last few miles I managed to stay ahead of her. I hit the first water stop on the run and guess who is in front of me. I catch up and “we” begin to talk. Nancy said “I know I can finish even if I walk”. I chatted it up for the next 4 hours and fifty minutes. I even asked her if I was talking too much. She said no it helped her to keep running. She stopped for a potty break with less than a mile to go and finished behind me.

Several months later I was looking at my bike photo from the race that hangs in my office. I use the photo as an inspiration when things get tough. My God, Nancy is right behind me.
